As AFN celebrates it 65th year of serving American forces in Europe, Gary has been a part of it since the early “60s”. Starting as a DJ when he wore the khaki uniform as a Spec. 5 to today, he has pretty much done it all; reporter, newscaster, anchorman, cameraman, producer, etc. etc. Ask him why is still at it and he will tell you it is because he loves his job, especially radio.
Broadcasters who work in television get “face recognition”. You know, when some one stops you in the Commissary with, “aren’t you the guy who does the news”. But Gary gets voice recognition, “hey I know that voice, you are Gary Bautell”. And even though he is the radio boss, you will always find him behind a mike somewhere doing a newscast, a special report or hosting a OpenLine show.
