Yes, it's Halloween time again! If you missed this bit on my show, then read on for the details.

AFN Europe broadcast a frightening radio piece in 1952 that was so shocking, it scared the heck out of most of the European audience who was tuned in.

This is a classic piece of AFN Europe broadcast history. Now, you can listen to it at your leisure.

I've been reading the Starfist saga for some time, going all the way back to the time before I rejoined the Army.  These stories of future fighting men ring with authenticity, not surprising, since their creator, David Sherman, along with his cowriter, Dan Cragg, are both veterans.  Yet more coolness, David Sherman talked to me on Connections; revealing origins, insights and thoughts of the future regarding the Marines of the 34th FIST.  Good characters, believable tactics, engaging speculation and mystery, this is the Starfist saga, as well as the other works of David Sherman.

Click on the following links below to hear portions of my interview with David.

In segment one, he talks a bit more about Starfist, what it's all about...

STARFIST 1

David Sherman and Dan Cragg used real military history as some of the inspiration for his Starfist tales.  Here, we talked a bit about some of the history that stands out...

STARFIST 2

Of course, when writing a star spanning saga, there's the question, is anyone else out there.  David Sherman touched upon this subject...

STARFIST 3

The Confederation, the government served by the 34th FIST, has it's "fists" full dealing with this situation.  The measures it has taken are less than ideal, but show a government having to improvise dealing with an unprecedented event in human history...

STARFIST 4

David Sherman and I speculate on Starfist the Movie and touch on other books David has penned...

Andrew Caroll is a writer and editor involved in compiling the stories and experiences of our service members and others touched by the military experience.  Inspired by a personal experience that caused him to think about the stories of those touched by war, he went on to bring together books that preserve the stories of those who serve, including Operation Homecoming, Letters of a Nation and War Letters

Operation Homecoming is also the name of the National Endowment for the Arts' effort to preserve these stories, in which Andrew Caroll has been involved.  Recently, he toured libraries throughout Europe, raising awareness of Operation Homecoming and leading seminars, teaching and encouraging servicemembers and others to commit their thoughts, experiences and stories to the printed page, to contribute to Operation Homecoming, a living history.

I visited him during his recent visit to the library in Patrick Henry Village, Heidelberg, Germany.  He gave a multimedia presentation on Operation Homecoming and answered questions.  Even though war is a stressful and often horrific experience, humor was to be found...

Click the following links to hear excerpts from "War Letters"

Also, the matter of fact nature of some of the tales would soft sell, yet underscore, the amazing nature of the narrative...

WAR LETTER 2

Ultimately, we are talking about war, however.  Tragedy is a part of the mix...

WAR LETTER 3

Sometimes, comedy and tragedy intermingle...

WAR LETTER 4

Dear Regulators,

If you watch AFN television, you've probably seen the new spot for the Connections show, featuring "yours truly."

I came up with the James Bond theme, being the international man of mystery that is me. My friend, Spc. Harris, formerly with AFN Heidelberg, came by one weekend and we shot the raw video.

After playing around with different ideas, it was obvious that my talents are best served behind the microphone, entertaining my fellow regulators on Connections.

I presented the idea to Mr. Scott Adams, graphics guru extraordinare at AFN. He came up with the final product and totally exceed my expectations. So thanks to him, Connections has a great promotional video and I look fierce.

Below, you'll see two images: one representing the original spot idea and one showing the final product. Click on the respective image to see the video of that particular TV spot.

I chatted with actor D.B. Sweeney. D.B. Sweeney has been in a number of projects, going back to the 80s with the World War Two arial tale, Memphis Bell.  In the 90s, he was in the series Strange Luck, an odd paranormal show about a guy with odd swings of fortune. In this first segment, he talks about the oddness of training for a military film, TV and the Age of DVD.

D.B.'s new film is Two Tickets to Paradise. Described as a road film, a buddy pic and a guy film, this movie features a stellar cast, including D.B., John C. McGinley and Ed Harris. Self financed, independent, D.B. describes making it and showing it to U.S. service members everywhere.

Mission: To see Duran Duran performing in their home town. Additionally, to add the UK to list of countries I've visited.

Well, all was accomplished, but not without a bit of sweat and tears, and small wonder no blood was involved.

First of all, some advice. When traveling to the UK, if you are going to be driving yourself, in a town of any real size, best bring a GPS. If you don't, youmay spend a huge amount of time driving around looking for where you want to go. This is especially important if you are on a time constraint.

Second, summer in Britain isn't quite like that in other countries, including other European countries. She seems determined to hang onto grey and rainy for all occasions.

Third, shifting with your left hand feels weird, even weirder than driving in the wrong lane, until you get used to it.

Fourth, traditional English breakfast? Poached and scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, baked beans and sauted mushrooms, with toast.

Ok, a long time gone into the not so tender bosom of Grafenwoehr’s Non Commissioned Officers Academy and the Jedi padawan experience of the Warrior Leader Course.

Well, I’ve shaken off all the physical and psychological damage and taken my wounds and added them to the pomp and pageantry that is our daily march to the verdant valley.

Regulators, POST! Campers, assemble! Connections is back and in full effect, because Stoney said so! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Today, I had the good fortune to visit with June Walpert.  She entered "Radio Row" here to appear on our “Open Line” show.  Fortunately, she had a little time and decided to hang out and talk to me as well.  Definitely not talked out from her rounds on “Open Line”, she had excellent financial advice to pass onto the Regulators and Campers of Connections.  First off, I asked her about new servicemembers and the smart moves they can make when starting out…

Click here to listen to Part 1 of the interview

The interview continued, as June Walpert continued her sage wisdom on matters financial.  In this case, she addressed those at the opposite end of the financial spectrum, temporally speaking.  Your military career is reaching it’s end.  What next?

Statement for the award ceremony:  On April 9, 2008, there was a flurry of activity, all centered around me for some inexplicable reason.  First, there was the promotion board.  Yep, they want to promote me around here. SSG Dijon Rolle even thought it was a good idea, beating me up for over a month to ensure that I exhibited dominance.  Once said dominance was achieved and they were more certain they still wanted me around, it was down to the studio to make it all official.  SSG Rolle kindly ran the flight deck that day while Regulator 33 (COL Scott Malcom) emerged from his shadowy vigil and accepted six more years off my soul in the service of Uncle Sam.  At least one more year of that will be given unto the Regulators and Campers, the good people who contribute and enjoy Connections on a daily basis.  Regulators, RIDE!  And everyone else, stay low.

On a military/AFN history note, this was the first on-air reenlistment performed by COL Malcom, performed at the Robert J. Harlan Building on Coleman Barracks, and as far as we know, possibly the first one performed in AFN history, since we went on the air July 4th, 1943.

Colonel Scott Malcom, 33rd commander of AFN Europe, with "Stoney" after his re-enlistment.
"Stoney" gets ready to cut the cake in his own weird way.

Completely on a wild hair on a show, like some of my best ideas happen (some of my worst as well), I came up with this nugget.

The Regulators are the true contributors to the show, the regular callers who love the show, love the music, and for some reason, love listening to me and my brain droppings.  They drop brain of their own and the total mix becomes what you know as Connections, Monday through Friday, 2-6 Central European time.

Now, commanders and other leaders make coins to hand out to those who display excellence, who contribute in some meaningful way to the functioning of a unit/team/outfit.  The Regulators exhibit that kind of excellence, helping to make the show the broadcasting juggernaut it is.  So I thought, why not get a coin made for the show?  This one is for the Regulators and others who make significant contributions to the show.

I’m going to pay for it’s actual creation, so don’t worry about that.  I’ve got it handled.

What I need from the Regulators and everyone else who cares are ideas for the coin’s faces and what slogan(s) will be on the coin.  Email me at junius.stone@smc.army.mil for design ideas.  Also, send slogan ideas.  Here’s is what we have so far…

  • Rock N’ Roll
  • Hammer Time
  • No Fear
  • The Iron Rock
  • Rock, Roll, Regulate
  • Camp, Regulate, Connect
  • Stay Low
  • Regulators RIDE!
So, whatcha got?  Bring it on…
